Our
Story

A discovery, a miracle, and a decision to share both with the world.

Bettina and Kenneth — Hive & Harmony
Bettina & Kenneth · Hive & Harmony
In Kenneth's words

Wedid not set out to start a candle company. What we set out to do was find something that matched Bettina — her values, her eye for beauty, her fourteen years of building Oeko Conscious Cleaning into one of Sydney's most respected chemical-free cleaning businesses. Something that deserved her. After nearly a decade and a half of proving that you could run a successful business without compromising on what you put into the world, she was ready for the next chapter. We just had to find it.

We found it in a gift hamper.

I
The Idea

Bettina's instinct was to create a conscious gifting business — beautifully curated packs built around products that were genuinely responsible. Sustainable. Considered. The kind of gift that said something about the person giving it. And at the centre of every pack, she wanted a pure beeswax candle. Not soy. Not coconut. Not paraffin. Beeswax. Because Bettina already understood, at an intuitive level, that beeswax was different.

She reached out to the founder of Queen B — the beloved pure beeswax candle company that had been part of the Northern Beaches community for twenty-five years — to explore buying candles wholesale for the hampers.

What she was told changed everything.

After a quarter century, the founder was exhausted. The business she had built with such care and conviction — the business that had introduced thousands of Australians to the miracle of pure beeswax — was closing. She had decided. It was time.

Bettina came home and told me. We looked at each other and thought the same thing. We arranged a meeting, explored every possibility — how we might help carry Queen B forward, how our energy and her legacy might find a way to continue. But the founder had made her peace with closing. She was ready to put it down.

And so Queen B announced its closure.

II
The Discovery
Beeswax candle making

In a beautiful and very human twist, Queen B's closure triggered a rush of orders — and the founder offered Bettina a job.

What happened next is the
part of this story I love most.

Bettina walked into the Queen B studio on the Northern Beaches — less than ten minutes from where we now make our own candles — and picked up a piece of pure beeswax for the first time. She felt the warmth of it. The weight. The faint, unassuming scent of honey that needed nothing added to it because it was already complete. She watched it roll, watched it pour, watched it burn — cleanly, slowly, honestly — and she fell in love.

I
Not with candles

With this substance. Pure beeswax is unlike anything else. It comes from nature already as a wax — no factory, no chemical processing, no hydrogenation, no blending. The bees made it perfect and it arrives perfect.

II
She called every evening

Each day working alongside the founder, Bettina discovered something new. The burn. The glow. The environmental circle. The beekeepers. The food chain. She called me every evening with a new piece of the puzzle.

III
I started researching

The more I read, the more I understood what Bettina was feeling. Pure beeswax is the longest burning, cleanest burning, most natural candle wax on earth. And yet Queen B — the brand that had told this story better than anyone in Australia — was walking away.

The Name
Why we chose these two words
Hive & Harmony
Hive

The more we learned about bees, the more we were moved by what they represent. A hive is not just where beeswax comes from. It is one of nature's most perfect systems.

Sixty thousand individuals working in complete cooperation, producing something extraordinary, sustaining life far beyond their own. The hive is the miracle behind the wax. We wanted to honour it in our name.

Harmony

Harmony is Bettina's word. It is the value she has built her life around — the belief that how we live, what we buy, what we bring into our homes should be in harmony with the planet, with humanity, with nature.

Fourteen years of chemical-free cleaning was harmony in practice. Pure beeswax is the most harmonious candle material that exists. It takes nothing the earth did not freely offer. It gives back by supporting the beekeepers who protect the colonies that pollinate the food chain that feeds us all.

Our belief

The most beautiful things are the ones
that leave the world better than they found it.

IV
Nature Perfect
Why beeswax

Nature
Perfect.

Process Perfect
The only wax that needs no factory

Every other candle wax — soy, coconut, palm, paraffin — requires industrial hydrogenation or chemical processing to become a wax. Beeswax comes from the hive already as a wax. It is filtered. Nothing more. No chemistry. No factory. No intervention.

Burn Perfect
The longest, cleanest burn of any wax

Pure beeswax burns longer and cleaner than any other natural wax. No synthetic soot. No toxic byproducts. No carcinogens. The same warm, honeyed light that has illuminated human ceremony for five thousand years.

Safety Perfect
The safest candle in your home

No petroleum derivatives. No synthetic fragrance compounds. No chemical additives. Pure beeswax is the only candle wax without reservation — safe for people with asthma, allergies, and sensitivities. The only candle you can burn without a second thought.

Environment Perfect
No deforestation. No GMO. No factory farms.

Beeswax production supports beekeepers who tend hives, which encourages human-supported bee colonies, which supports our food chain through pollination. Every Hive & Harmony candle is a small act of ecological support. No deforestation. No genetic modification. No industrial farming.

Value Perfect
The best cost per burn hour of any candle

A Glasshouse candle costs $1.00 per hour of light. A Jo Malone costs $2.67. Our pure beeswax pillar costs as little as 63 cents per hour — and it is the only one made from a single, unaltered natural substance. Better value. Better material. Better burn.

Sensory Perfect
The only wax with its own natural fragrance

Pure beeswax has a natural warmth — a quiet, honeyed presence that needs nothing added to it. Every other luxury candle adds synthetic fragrance because their wax has no scent of its own. Ours has. Because the bees already perfected it.
